Through this one-hour Focus Segment, educators will gain a deeper understanding of how to move instruction from Quad A to Quad D. Participants will pay special attention to QUAD D Ideal Strategies to analyze future instructional plans. Because teachers will focus on improving lessons in the future, this FOCUS segement lends itself well to PLC's or other lesson study groups.
During this FOCUS segment, educators will investigate learner engagement and how to increase active learner engagement during classroom instruction. Using a guided template and existing lessons, participants will analyze the opportunities for authentic student engagement and stratagize ways to improve. Gold Seal Lessons can also be used as models to analyze.

Rocky Heights Middle School (Rocky Heights) opened in 2003 with 400 students in grades seven and eight. This was a time of tremendous growth in the nation’s fastest growing county, Douglas County, Colorado. Rock Height’s small beginnings and hand picked staff were the foundation for a belief based on doing what’s best for kids. Students will complete in depth research of the Hershey organization, including the amusement park, hotel, museum, and factory. Students will find the cost for the class to visit Hershey. Students will take a virtual tour of the factory, take a virtual ride on the rollercoasters, and gather information about the rollercoasters. Finally, students will reflect on their learning in writing.

As a final project to the course Entrepreneurship, students will write a business plan based a company of their choice with reference to a specific need that the company fulfills for local consumers. Students will work independently in the computer lab utilizing the Internet and provided examples of business plans. Research must be documented, sources are to be cited, and include a plan of action. Students will then present their business plan.
Students will collect data from a sample of Frito-Lay snack size chip bags. After weighing each bag, students will use their knowledge of significance testing to determine if customers are being cheated by the company.
The students will go to their classroom store to purchase items using 20 tickets. They will apply subtraction skills by recording their purchases on a worksheet. Students will then create fact families, and write corresponding word problems.
